Belarus, European Commission to launch new project in nuclear, radiation safety in 2018

MINSK, 2 October (BelTA) – The Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor) and the European Commission held negotiations to discuss the implementation of current projects and preparations for a new long-term technical cooperation project. As a result of the negotiations, the sides agreed to launch a new project in radiation and nuclear safety in 2018, BelTA learned from the website of Gosatomnadzor.

The new project is meant to provide assistance to the Belarusian regulatory agency in nuclear and radiation safety – Gosatomnadzor. There are plans to start implementing the project in 2018, after both sides complete the necessary administrative procedures.

In accordance with the technical specification agreed upon beforehand, taking part in the project will experts from Bulgaria, Hungary, Germany, Lithuania, France, Sweden, and Ukraine. They are set to share the European experience with Belarusian specialists in several fields: nuclear and radiation safety at nuclear facilities; development of the regulatory agency’s competence and its system of technical support for technical review; expansion of capacities in emergency preparedness and response; promotion of the regulation of safe radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel disposal.
