Belarus CEC to observe referendum in Tajikistan

MINSK, 18 May (BelTA) – Representatives of the Belarusian Central Election Commission (CEC) will observe the referendum on constitutional changes in Tajikistan. The information has been posted on the website of the Central Election Commission of Belarus, BelTA has learned.

According to the CEC, Alexander Dudko and Mikhail Petrushin will make part of the CIS observation mission. The CIS election observation mission will comprise over 100 representatives of the CIS member states (apart from Ukraine and Tajikistan), the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (IPA), the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, the CIS Executive Committee.

Partaking in monitoring the referendum as short-term observers will also be representatives of the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly. The group of observers will work in Dushanbe, a number of communities and Khatlon Region. The group will include 33 international observers representing Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova and Russia. Among them are MPs, representatives of supreme legislative bodies, the Secretariat of the CIS IPA Council, and also experts of the International Institute of Monitoring Democracy Development, Parliamentarianism and Suffrage Protection for the Citizens of the IPA CIS Member Nations.

Belarus will be represented in the CIS IPA observation mission by Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Permanent Commission fro International Affairs Vitaly Busko.

A constitutional referendum will be held in Tajikistan on 22 May 2016. Tajikistan people will express their opinion regarding the amendments to the constitution that will allow the president to run for office an infinite number of times.
