Belarus attends UNAIDS Global Review Panel meeting

MINSK, 20 March (BelTA) - Belarus presented its national strategy in combating HIV/AIDS during the second meeting of the UNAIDS Global Review Panel, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Belarusian delegation included Belarus’ First Deputy Health Minister Dmitry Pinevich and Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations Office in Geneva Yuri Ambrazevich. The purpose of the panel is to assess the capacity of UNAIDS in the field of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment operations and to develop appropriate recommendations.

Representatives of Belarus as members of the UNAIDS Program Coordinating Board (the executive body of the Joint Program) presented the national experience in combating HIV/AIDS, and also the areas of identifying, preventing and terminating the AIDS epidemic in the future. They spoke for the need to reduce the cost of procurement of antiretroviral drugs due to the flexibility of price policies on available international trading platforms.

The example of the agreements reached in Minsk in November 2016 within the framework of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) regional meeting on expanding access to affordable and quality assured antiretroviral and antituberculosis medicines was cited as the positive experience of regional cooperation on the issue.

Dmitry Pinevich met with Executive Director of UNAIDS Michel Sidibe and his deputies Luiz Loures and Jan Beagle. An agreement was reached that Michel Sidibe will visit Minsk on 11-12 April.
