Belarus’ farm exports projected at $2.8-3bn in 2017

MINSK, 21 September (BelTA) – Belarus’ Agriculture and Food Ministry intends to increase agricultural exports to a total of $2.8-3 billion in 2017, Belarus' First Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister Leonid Marinich told journalists ahead of the CIS Intergovernmental Council for Agricultural Industry session on 22 September, BelTA has learned.

"In 2016 the farm export amounted to $2.6 billion. The export has been increasing this year and we hope that it will surpass the rate of 2016. We expect the export to reach $2.8-3 billion in 2017. Our products are in demand, we have almost nothing on stock," Leonid Marinich said and specified that he was talking about the companies affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Industry.

Leonid Marinich noted that Belarus supplies products to 55 countries. "We branched out into the new markets, for example in the Middle East. We have been developing the traditional markets and exploring the new promising markets," he said. "As a result, the export structure changed. For example, the share of exports to Russia reduced by 3.4%," the minister added.

The meeting of the CIS Intergovernmental Council for Agricultural Industry is running in Minsk on 21-22 September. Members of the Council for Agricultural Industry are set to sum up the preliminary results of the agricultural industry performance in 2017, consider the proposals to develop interstate agricultural cooperation and specialization and to establish the common agricultural market in accordance with the action plan for the third stage (2016-2020) of the CIS Economic Development Strategy (till 2020). The matter of land degradation in the CIS countries is also on the agenda.

Participants of the session will also review the state of the sugar market and prospects to develop the sugar beet seeds market, and also the trends in the grain, meat and dairy markets. The Intergovernmental Council members intend to discuss the measures to reduce agro-logistic restrictions between the CIS countries, and to review the cooperation in reclamation of land.

The CIS Intergovernmental Council for Agricultural Industry was set up in 1993. It includes the heads of central executive bodies in agricultural industry. The Council coordinates the joint activities and efforts of the CIS states to promote the sustainable development of agricultural production, establish the common agricultural market, implement the scientific and investment policies, provide logistical support for the agricultural industry, promote standardization and certification, legal protection of the intellectual property and provide agrochemical maintenance.
