About 200 joint projects filed for Latvia-Lithuania-Belarus cross-border cooperation program

GRODNO, 22 September (BelTA) – About 200 joint projects have been submitted for the cross-border cooperation program Latvia-Lithuania-Belarus, Gintaras Skamarocius, director of the Marijampole office of Euroregion Neman, told the media, BelTA has learned.

Gintaras Skamarocius attended the nationwide universal exhibition-fair Euroregion Neman2017 which opened in Grodno on 22 September.

“Euroregion Neman helps us strengthen contacts in various areas, including business. One of issues on the agenda of the meetings and discussions will be the second phase of the cross-border cooperation program Latvia-Lithuania-Belarus. About 200 joint projects were filed for the program at the end of last year. A large number are connected with Grodno Oblast. Now the process of selection of the projects what will receive funding is underway. The results will be announced very soon,” Gintaras Skamarocius said. Projects are diverse. Some of them are about the development of the tourism potential of the frontier regions, the construction of bike lanes, routes marking, the joint tourist use of the Neman River and other waterways. In addition, a number of projects deal with the education and health sectors.

Gintaras Skamarocius stressed that Grodno Oblast is one of the strongest links of the Euroregion union. According to him, the five-day visa-free program applicable in some part of Grodno Oblast has become an example for other countries. “Replicating this experience in other countries participating in the cross-border program will certainly serve as a stimulus for mutual trips and for promoting cooperation in other areas. The work in this direction is already in progress,” he said.

More than 160 producers including representatives of 15 companies from Italy, China, Azerbaijan, Latvia and Poland will showcase their products and services at the 19th edition of the national universal exhibition Euroregion Neman that covers an area of more than 1,200m2.

In the last few years the exhibition has become one of the biggest projects of the cross-border union Euroregion Neman that initially comprised Belarus' Grodno Oblast, Poland's Suwalki, Lithuania's Alytus and Marijampole, and later other regions of Poland, Lithuania and Russia. The project is designed to intensify cooperation between Grodno Oblast and the border territories of Lithuania, Poland, and Russia. The major goal of the exhibition is to expand trade and economic ties between neighboring states and seek options for the most successful and mutually beneficial cooperation.
